Motivation Monday: New Year’s Resolutions – Yes or No?

Happy Motivation Monday, CrossFit Sunnyside!

It’s that time of year when everyone talks about New Year’s resolutions. But let’s get real: Are they worth it? Or are they just setting us up for disappointment?

First, the hard truth. Recent surveys show that exercising more is consistently one of the top New Year’s resolutions for Americans in 2026 – often ranking #1, with around 25-48% of people citing it as their goal. That’s fantastic because it means more people are prioritizing health and fitness! But here’s the flip side: Studies indicate that fewer than 10% of people stick to their resolutions for the full year. Many abandon them by mid-February, and “Quitter’s Day” (the second Friday in January) is a real phenomenon where motivation starts to dip.

Why do so many resolutions fail? Often, they’re too vague (“get fit”), too ambitious (“work out every day”), or tied to an arbitrary calendar flip. Life gets in the way – work, family, unexpected challenges – and that all-or-nothing mindset leads to guilt and giving up.

But does that mean we should say “no” to New Year’s resolutions entirely? Not at all. At CrossFit Sunnyside, we believe in the power of intention and consistent effort.

Resolutions can be a great spark if done right. The key is shifting from rigid promises to flexible, sustainable systems.

Here’s our take: Yes to goals, but smarter ones. Ditch the pressure of January 1st deadlines and embrace approaches that build real habits. Here are some proven alternatives that align perfectly with our CrossFit philosophy of constant variation, community support, and measurable progress:

  1. Use SMART Goals: Make them Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. Instead of “exercise more,” try “attend 3 CrossFit classes per week for the next month.” Track your WODs, PRs, and how you feel – our coaches are here to help scale and celebrate wins.
  2. Set Open Goals: Research shows “open” goals like “see how strong I can get this year” or “explore how many new movements I can master” lead to better adherence than strict targets. They allow flexibility and reduce pressure, perfect for our varied programming. No, these aren’t in contradiction with SMART goals—they complement each other beautifully. SMART provides structure for those who thrive on clear milestones, while open goals boost enjoyment and long-term motivation, especially for beginners or when building habits. Many of our members start with open goals to spark consistency, then add SMART elements as momentum builds. The best approach? Experiment with both and see what keeps you showing up—that’s the true CrossFit mindset of progress over perfection.
  3. Focus on Systems and Habits: Build daily or weekly routines rather than outcome-focused resolutions. Commit to showing up – pack your gym bag the night before, join our supportive group classes, or pair up with an accountability buddy from the box. Small, consistent actions compound into big results.
  4. Try Tiny Experiments: Test new habits in short bursts. Want better nutrition? Experiment with meal prepping for two weeks. Curious about mobility? Add 10 minutes of stretching post-WOD. See what sticks without the all-or-nothing trap.
  5. Choose a Word or Theme for the Year: Something like “Consistency,” “Strength,” or “Community.” Let it guide your decisions – when you’re tempted to skip a class, ask if it aligns with your word.

At CrossFit Sunnyside, we’ve seen it all – members crushing goals because they focus on progress over perfection. Our community is what sets us apart: cheering each other during burpees, high-fiving after a tough metcon, and building friendships that keep you coming back.

So, resolutions? Yes – if they’re adaptable and backed by action. No – if they’re rigid and guilt-inducing. Whatever you choose, start today. Set your schedule for classes this week, chat with a coach about your goals, and let’s make 2026 your strongest year yet.

You’ve got this, Sunnyside fam. Keep showing up, keep pushing, and keep getting better.

See you in class!
