1. How long have you been with us at CrossFit Sunnyside? What made you start CrossFit?
It’s been a little over a year and I can’t believe how fast it went by and how much I’ve improved as an athlete. I knew I needed a class-based workout (otherwise I walk into a gym, look around, and go home thinking “Hey, I gymed today!”) and I liked lifting weights, so CrossFit seemed like a good fit.
2. You’ve improved tremendously since starting with us. Talk to us about that and what got and kept you motivated.
I’ve actually been thinking about this a lot since I started doing barbell a few weeks ago. I remember barely being able to get a 35 lb bar above my head. Or bench pressing it. And thinking I was going to die halfway through each class. Now I can press 70 lbs! And although some classes are intimidating, I know the coaches and my fellow sufferers will help me power through it.
3. What advice do you have for people just getting started?
Check your ego at the door. Start slow and light, get a feel for all the movements before you start trying to add more weight. Don’t try to compete with other people in the room. I like to say, “I’m competing against the alternate reality version of myself that is sitting on the couch right now.”
When you’re not at CrossFit Sunnyside, where are we most likely to find you?
I’m a bit of a homebody, but I love to try new foods or just ridiculous variations on familiar ones. So if I’m not at the gym, and I’m not at home, I’m out stuffing my face.
4. What has been the most challenging part of your journey? Biggest obstacles?
Food is hard. Patience is hard. I’ve gotten better at both. The biggest hurdle was really the first one: Convincing myself that I could do this, and that it was worth doing.
5. What changes have you made to your daily life, diet & workout routine that have been the most successful for you?
I try to make it to the gym at LEAST 3 times a week. Usually this means going to bed around 9:30pm so I can get up for the 7am class. I always struggle with my diet; finding the time and energy to shop and cook is rough. I recently started getting meals from Kettlebell Kitchen, which has really helped.
6. Something no one at the gym knows about you.
I was a Fire Rescue Explorer in high school. I learned how to triage victims, some very basic medical treatments, and got to ride along on emergency calls.
7. What do you enjoy most about CrossFit?
Getting to know awesome people in my neighborhood! Our gym is such an amazing community of interesting people who all come together to get stronger and support each other. Walking into the gym is like walking into another room in my home.
8. What impact has CrossFit Sunnyside had on your life in and out of the gym?
Aside from the benefits of increased strength and endurance, my chronic back and neck problems have become much less severe. I used to have days when I couldn’t turn my head without pain. Now the most I get is a knot in my shoulder blade.
I also feel more self-confident, and I appreciate my body more for what it can do (even when I think it can’t) than for how it looks.
